The Geography Laboratory at Hazi A. K. Khan College plays a vital role in providing students with a comprehensive understanding of geographical concepts, encompassing the full range of physical, human, and nature-society geography. The lab is designed to expose students to both theoretical knowledge and practical applications through hands-on experience with various geographical techniques. Equipped with an extensive collection of tools, the lab supports students in developing both qualitative and quantitative research skills.
Key resources include a wide variety of maps, topographic sheets, and survey equipment such as tracing tables, thermometers, barometers, magnetic compasses, electric globes, anemometers, and various advanced instruments like the Transit Theodolite, Dumpy Level, Auto Level, Prismatic Compass, Abney Level, and GPS (Garmin). These instruments are essential for conducting surveys, geographical mapping, and understanding environmental changes. Additionally, the lab provides students with geological maps, reading staff, ranging rods, and a variety of equipment stands, such as those for the theodolite and dumpy level.
The lab also houses essential teaching aids such as satellite images, aerial photographs, stereoscopes, globes, and a variety of rock and mineral samples. With tools like measuring tapes, plumb bobs, and magnifying glasses, students are well-equipped to carry out in-depth fieldwork and laboratory experiments. The presence of digital resources, including CDs on various topics and access to Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), further enriches the students’ learning experience.
Field trips are a crucial part of the lab's curriculum, allowing students to study natural processes and landscape changes in real-world environments using GPS and GIS technologies. These field trips give students the opportunity to observe physical changes and enhance their understanding of geographical patterns.
In terms of research support, the lab is furnished with practical items such as scientific calculators, scales, Rotring pens, stencils, and various mapping tools like French curves, dividers, and protectors. For presentation and documentation purposes, a colour printer with a scanner (EPSON Ecotank L3211), computers, and presentation aids like a PRESEN wireless torch are also available.
The Geography Laboratory at Hazi A. K. Khan College is well-structured to support the academic and research needs of geography students, offering a balanced approach to both practical and theoretical learning. It remains a cornerstone of the department, facilitating the development of essential geographical skills and knowledge.
