About National Service Scheme (NSS)

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of the Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. It provides opportunities for student youth of schools and colleges to engage in government-led community service activities and programs. The sole aim of the NSS is to provide hands on experience to young students in delivering community service. The NSS was launched in 1969 to develop the personality and character of student youth through voluntary community service, to fulfil the purpose of "Education through Service".

 

Objectives:

The main objectives of National Service Scheme (NSS) are:

• Understand the community in which they work
• Understand themselves in relation to their community
• Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem-solving
• Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility
• Utilise their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems
• Develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities
• Gain skills in mobilising community participation
• Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitudes
• Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters and
• Practise national integration and social harmony

About the NSS Unit of Hazi A. K. Khan College:

Hazi A. K. Khan College boasts an active National Service Scheme (NSS) unit that operates with a multifaceted approach aimed at holistic community development.  The activities of the NSS Unit span across various domains including environmental awareness and sustainability, health and sanitation, women empowerment, community support and relief efforts, as well as road safety and civic awareness. The unit has imbibed the motto of NSS, ‘NOT ME BUT YOU’, that reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for self-less service. Along with the regular activities and extension programmes this voluntary unit conducts seven days special camp every year.

Major Activities:

• The NSS unit engages in activities such as tree plantation drives, sapling distribution, and campaigns against environmental threats like Parthenium weed. It also promotes eco-friendly practices, water conservation, and reduction of plastic usage.
• The NSS unit conducts various awareness programs on critical health issues including HIV/AIDS, COVID-19, dengue fever. They emphasize hygiene practices, blood donation, and thalassemia prevention.
• The NSS unit focuses on raising awareness about gender-based issues like child marriage and women's trafficking. It advocates for girl child education, women's rights, and gender equality.
• The NSS unit provides essential support during times of crisis through food distribution, donation drives, book distribution and disaster relief efforts.
• The NSS unit conducts programs to educate the community about road safety rules and civic responsibilities.
